In my last post, I talked about why I made my own baby food, one of the reasons being that there's zero waste because the food is yummy enough for me to eat if baby doesn't finish it. In this post, I’ll talk about how I made it and stored it.
First, storage: when my baby was really young and only ate 2 oz at a time, I’d store the baby food in tiny Tupperware containers and put them in the freezer. You can also use ice cube trays. Before bed, I’d try to put in the fridge approximately what the baby would eat the next day.
I defrosted the food in the microwave whenever I forgot to defrost it overnight, but I hated doing this because it was impossible to get the temperatures right.
When my daughter grew and ate larger quantities, I stored the food in breast milk bags and put those in the freezer. I would spend an entire afternoon making all these foods at once and stock the freezer full of baby food, but you don't have to get that intense. Each of these recipes are super quick to make on their own, so if you whipped one up while you were making dinner, it wouldn’t interrupt your schedule at all. It was incredibly satisfying to watch my baby gobble up her food and to know that 1. I was feeding her healthy, nutrient-rich food, 2. I was saving money, and 3. I was teaching her to appreciate a variety of flavors. Making my own baby food turned into a way for me to express my love for my child. We all have different ways of expressing love for our children, and one worked for me.
Below are my favorite baby foods. Some of them are easy enough that they don’t need a recipe, but others have specific instructions.
