Every week my local grocery store has tons of buy-one-get-one deals. Everything else at this store is more expensive than Walmart, so I typically go there to buy only the sale items.
It’s fun to swipe my card and see my charge on the cash register literally get slashed in half.
The deals are so sweet that I’ll buy anything I think my family will eat and then I'll plan most of our meals around the food I bring home.
Last time I went, though, I made a mistake. A lot of the sale items were freezer foods. I didn’t stop to think if all those items would actually fit in my freezer. Oops.
Freezer space is precious when you don’t waste food. If I make a dish that we’re going to get sick of before it’s gone, I often put a dinner’s worth of it in the freezer. I also freeze homemade chicken broth and vegetable broth, fruit for smoothies, and on-the-go homemade lunches like sandwiches and burritos, just to name a few.
I can’t afford to clutter my freezer up with impulse buys! But not to worry; I have a freezer hack for that. What takes up the most space in a freezer is the boxes. Not only are they bulky and mostly filled with air, but they continue to take up just as much room as you eat through the food. So as soon as I come home from the store, I take every freezer food out of its box. If the food comes with heating instructions, I cut them off of the box and tape them on. This is especially useful for single-serving desserts like popsicles and ice cream sandwiches because I can stuff them into the nooks and crannies of the freezer that were going to be empty anyway. Doing this takes up a third as much space than if everything frozen I had was in a box.
